Have you noticed all of these stamps all over food packages these days? Are you confused?
One of the things we want to do is simplify these terms and help you figure out what you should (and shouldn’t) be eating.
Let’s start with GMO’s. What in the world is a GMO anyway?
According to the NON GMO Project
“A GMO, or genetically modified organism, is a plant, animal, microorganism or other organism whose genetic makeup has been modified using recombinant DNA methods (also called gene splicing), gene modification
or transgenic technology. This relatively new science creates unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.”
Simply put, a GMO is a plant, animal or organism that has been messed with in a lab to change it from its natural form. Is this a really big deal? My answer is Yes!!! Here are a few reasons why:
- Herbicide tolerant crops are now a big problem. Farmers are able to spray all sorts of chemicals on our food without killing it.
- Plants are now producing their own pesticides (um that’s kinda weird)
- We are no longer eating the same foods as our grandparents – thank you Michael Pollan.
Did you know GMO crops are banned in over 38 countries! Why?
“Various feeding studies in animals have resulted in tumors, damaged immune systems, smaller brains, livers, birth defects, reproductive problems and infertility.
GMOs have also been linked with allergies, various digestive and bowel syndromes”

I am not sure about you but I often find myself asking “Why are people so sick these days?” “Why are we seeing a spike in cancer rates?” “Why does it seem like everybody is allergic to something?” Could GMO’s be the cause?
Are you exposed to GMO’s? If you are eating anything with Soy, Corn or Canola, the answer is “Yes” – over 90% of these crops are GMO. Start reading labels and see if one or all of these are in the ingredient list.
What can you do about it?
The easiest way to determine if your food is free from GMOs is to look for the Non GMO Project logo. This organization did all of the hard work for us. They even have an app in GooglePlay and iTunes.
So there you have it. If you still need more information, please visit http://www.nongmoproject.org/
