Missing the first meal of the day makes me grumpy. If you ask my best-friend, skipping any meal makes me cranky and difficult to be around. And let me tell you, skipping breakfast doesn’t make you skinny!
There’s an old saying that goes:
Eat breakfast like a King
Lunch like a Prince &
Dinner like a Pauper
Breakfast ( Get it break the fast? We are technically fasting while we are sleeping) is the most important meal of the day. It’s essentially, the fuel that gets our engines revving.
Here are a few truths about eating breakfast:
1.Increased Energy
“Breakfast is a chance to give your body the food it needs to replenish your blood glucose levels. Glucose is your main energy source; it fuels your brain and your body. Eating breakfast will provide your body with the glucose it needs to function properly and fight fatigue.” (LiveStrong)
2. It may protect your heart
“In a recent study that involved almost 27,000 men, researchers found that those who didn’t eat a morning meal were 27 percent more likely to develop heart disease than those who did. “Our research indicates that people who skip breakfast gain weight, which can lead to diabetes as well as high cholesterol and blood pressure—all of which can raise your risk of heart disease,” Rimm notes. The reason isn’t entirely known, but he says that breakfast skippers tend to overeat at other meals and snack excessively throughout the day.” (consumer Reports)
3. Inhibits calorie burning
“Spreading your food intake out over the course of the day keeps the metabolism revved and ready to go. If you limit your food consumption in the morning, your metabolism goes right to sleep…along with your weight loss goals!” (via US News: Health) (HellaWella)
Do you need a few ideas on how to start your day on the right foot? Well, I have a bunch for you:
1. Chug a glass of warm water and half of a lemon when you wake up. We’ve been dehydrated for an average of 7 hours. This helps to get stuff flowing again.
2. Have some grains and protein. Overnight oats, quinoa bowls, polenta, and avocado toast with an egg are an excellent way to begin.
3. Have some fruit. Blueberries, bananas, and other low glycemic foods are a great substitute for sugar donuts. Sweetness without the belly fat.
4. Have you heard of dinner for breakfast? We’ve all had breakfast for dinner. But, have you ever tried miso soup or roast turkey with sweet potatoes at 8 am? Oooh, you must!
5. Bacon isn’t the only protein. Try giving salmon cakes, veggie soup, or egg cups a shot.
Just think, if we wait 12 hours after dinner before we eat breakfast ( as recommended – more on that later), why would we need to fast any longer? So, what’s for breakfast? Share your meal below. (and hello, don’t forget to subscribe to Land of the Well)
I love that saying:
Eat breakfast like a King
Lunch like a Prince &
Dinner like a Pauper
It really puts things in perspective! Great article!
I can’t take credit for the saying but it’s a great lesson to follow!
